Next Session – May 30, 2013 – User Experience for Business Process Applications

We would like to invite you to our next session, which is planned for May 30, 2013.

Hildeberto Mendonça will speak to us about the “User Experience for Business Process Applications“.

Date: May 30 2013
Time: Open as of 18:30, conference start is 19:00. Conference end 21:30.
Place: Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel, Building Hermes, room

Sponsors: TRASYS Group, Megabanner.be and CTS

Session abstract:
If you were assigned to design and implement a business process based application, what would you decide about how the user interface should look like? User interface design is the most time consuming task in a software development process. It is highly subjective and under heavy criticism by end-users.

This presentation will help you better deal with this problem, exploring strategies to represent business processes in a way that end-users can easily understand what they see based on their business knowledge. We will discuss about a different approach for Business-IT traceability based on UX, an architecture and a methodology to support constant process changes, navigation approaches and the right widgets for the right actions.

Next Session: 21.02.2013 – Commons eID – Get in Touch with Belgian’s eID Card

The importance of digital signatures and dematerialization of paper becomes more and more apparent in our developers life. Soon or later, everybody of us will get in touch with these technologies, which are clearly the future.

Mostly unnoticed, a lot of services in Belgium and Brussels are migrating to what is called “guichet électronique” – the electronic citizens desk. Soon, we will do our citizens administration obligations via the internet without passing hours in waiting line in the communal offices!

This said, Belgium is one of the pioneers in e-identification. Did you know? The electronic ID card has been introduced long time ago and since 2011 every Belgian citizen has an ID card of this type.

Did you ever wonder how this works and especially how to integrate with the Belgian eID card? Actually, there are Java libraries available to interface your application with the eID card and that’s exactly what we will speak about in our next session!

** 21.02.2013 – Commons eID – Get in Touch with Belgian’s eID Card **

The conference location is open as of 18:30, conference start is 19:00. The location is the usual – the nice rooms of the HU Brussels (room number to be defined). This session will be relatively short (except if you have many questions :-) and you are invited to join the crowd for a bit of networking and a drink afterwards!

Next Session – 28/11/2012 – Is Java and JavaFX any good for drawing (or should just we go straight to HTML5)?

In this last session of the year we will speak about JavaFX and HTML5 … which might look like we are going to speak about apples and belgian fries in one session. And we will have a RaspberryPi and a Pandaboard to show as well… even more confusing, isn’t it?

I hope you are intrigued – then the only way to find out what this is all about is to join the session… :-p

This session is brought to you by our sponsors TRASYS, Oracle, Structure 101, CTS and Mega Banner and of course your humble Brussels JUG team!

Last tip: Don’t miss this! :-)

Next Session – 19.09.2012 – Stephane Epardaud, On Ceylon!

It’s time to awake from our hibernation and restart freshly into a new JUG season. Our first session is announced for the 19th of September.

Stephane Epardaud, currently on EU JUG tour, joins us in Brussels to speak about Ceylon. Stéphane works for Red Hat on the Ceylon project and is eager to share exiting news about this new JVM programming language with us.

In some words, Ceylon’s design goals include:

  • easy to learn and understand for Java and C# developers,
  • eliminate some of Java’s verbosity, but keep its readability,
  • improve upon Java’s typesafety,
  • provide a declarative syntax for expressing hierarchical information (user interface, external data, system configuration)
  • support and encourage a more functional style of programming with immutable objects and higher-order functions,
  • great support for meta-programming,
  • built-in modularity.

Let’s meet for another cool session to discover new universes :)

The location is not yet fixed but will probably at the HU Brussels in the center of our city, as usual. We keep you informed.

Upcoming: 26/04/2012 – Restructuring: Improving the modularity of an existing code-base

Update: Video of the session is online: https://vimeo.com/41214504
—–
After a longer pause, we are back with a very cool session:  “Restructuring: Improving the modularity of an existing code-base”.

Chris Chedgey, founder of Structure101 and based in England, flights over to test the hospitality of Belgian Juggies. He is welcome!

Here’s the pitch:

When a code-base reaches a certain age, it starts to creak, grind, rot. It seems like everything uses everything. Developers do not understand the big picture and start duplicating or creating parallel worlds of design, making things even worse. Architects are uneasy and sleep badly. Managers notice how long it takes to get new features into the product, and to get the bugs out of incremental releases, and they make sure nobody sleeps well. Now is the time for the code-base to be restructured, or die a painful death.

This talk covers the most common structural problems, gives strategies for fixing them with minimal impact to the logical design, and shows how this reduces coupling and complexity, improves modularity, and can be used to establish an architecture that the whole team understands and that helps the developers as they edit the code. In other words, how to stop the rot, and keep it stopped.

The principles and strategies will be illustrated by examples.

When: Thu, April 26 2012, starting 18:30.
Where: Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel, Stormstraat 2 / 2, Rue d’Assaut, ROOM 4118
Entry fee: free session.

Why: because it’s interesting, cool and you will meet a lot of other cool Java people.

Give-aways: Licenses for Structure 101 and Re-Structure 101, maybe more? :)

Aftermath: No English gentleman comes to Belgium without tasting our beer collection. Questions? :-)
