Adopt a JSR Program

The LJC – London Java Community (London JUG) – just started an interesting initiative: Adopt a JSR Program!

“This program is intended to encourage JUG members to get involved in a Java Specification Request (JSR) and to evangelise that JSR to their JUG and the wider Java community in order to increase grass roots participation. JSRs cover all aspects of the Java ecosystem such as the new Date and Time API coming into Java 8, the latest JEE7 APIs for the cloud and much more!”

BTW – joining the JCP is easy, is free and you get your own personal voice to decide about EC and other things that influence the future of Java.

JCP: The LJC and the New JSR to Evolve Java Community Process

The London Java Community has recently been elected into the JCP Executive Committee, together with the SouJava JUG.

On May 17, 2011, Oracle introduced New Java Specification Requests to Evolve Java Community Process. More details here: http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/399116 and here http://blogs.oracle.com/jcp/entry/jcp_next_jsr_submitted_to.

Concerning this new JSR, the London Java Community is calling for collaboration and exchange of ideas:

Hi all,

We’d love to hear your opinions on this JSR! We feel that this is a real opportunity for the JUGs and their members to get involved at the grassroots level of JSRs going forward. We’d also really appreciate it if you could pass the details of this JSR onto your members and try to solicit as much feedback as possible.

We held our regular LJC developer sessions last night and our members were really excited about the upcoming changes and offered some really useful suggestions.

This JSR is one of the main reasons that we stood for the JCP and we’re really excited to work with the community to make the JCP and JSRs as open as possible.

Cheers, Martijn & Ben – LJC

We would like to invite you to contribute with your ideas and opinions. For this, we propose to discuss on our Google Group. You may also let comments on this blog entry. We will make sure that your feedback will reach the LJC.

Speakers and Talks:

Main: Christophe Lombart – The Document & Content Management Ecosystem, a gentle introduction to the ECM technologies

Christophe has more than 16 years of IT experience and is currently focusing on technical analysis, software architecture, teaching & development around content and web technologies. He is also very active in the open-source community and committer on the Apache Sling and the Apache Jackrabbit projects. Moreover, he is one of the founder of the Objectif-Web project.

This presentation is an introduction on the main ECM concepts and technologies . We will start with an ECM definition and give information on the most popular use cases. The goal of this first part is to highlight the ECM features & challenges. We will also discuss about some interesting Web 2.0 concepts that could be used in a content oriented application. Finally, we will make a market overview and give more information of the newest “content technology” standards.

The second part of the presentation will provide more technical information on content repository. In order to understand its great benefit, we will compare it with a classic file system and a relational database. We will also provide more details on the JCR specification, which is certainly changing the ECM market. JCR stands for Content Repository API for Java, a specification that has been developed under the Java Community Process as JSR-170 (Version 1) and as JSR-283 (Version 2, main Java package is javax.jcr).

At the end, we will see the ECM standards in action within a simple demo based on Jackrabbit (the content repository provided by the Apache Sofware Foundation).

Teaser:

This will not be the last time Christophe will speak for us. Besides his presentation about ECM and introduction to the “Content Repository API for Java” and Jackrabbit, he proposes to inaugurate us into the clockwork of the Apache Software Foundation by explaining us how the ASF is organized and why its projects are always a great success.  Moreover he wants us to step beyond the usual “Struts/Flex or whatever – Spring – Hibernate – RDBMS” stack for building web and content based applications by seeing other possibilities in the Java World. And of course there are … More about this after the summer holidays!

Short: John Rizzo about the Black Belt Factory and the partnership with the Brussels JUG

John Rizzo is co-founder and CEO of Black Belt Factory. Foremost, he will introduce the operation mode and the purposes of the BBF community learning site and then he will explain in which way you as JUG members will be able to benefit from our partnership with the BBF.

More information about the event, the talks and the speakers are available in our Wiki Space.

Conference Place:

With the previous conference we celebrated the “Geeky Style” at GooglePlex. This session we will celebrate “Wisdom and Lore”! We are proud to announce that we are invited by the ULB, the Free University of Brussels, to hold our upcoming meet-up on their campus.

The session will be celebrated in the FORUM F of the auditoria of the PLAINE campus. The campus is easy to access by public transport and parking places are available as well.

The address is: Université Libre de Bruxelles, Campus de la Plaine, Boulevard du Triomphe, B-1050 Bruxelles

Public transport arriving at or near the campus: buses 71, 72, 95 – trams 23, 24, 25 – Metro, line 1A, station Delta. We plan to visit the place before the conference in order to see how we can make the access as easy and clear as possible. Please stay tuned (on our web page).

BruJUG Forum

Today, we would like to introduce the Brussels JUG Forum. You can reach it via the ‘Forum’ link in the right sidebar.

The forum is intended for all kind of coordination issues (trips to external events, joint visits of conferences etc.), polls & surveys and project planning. The main communication and discussion channel is and remains our Google Group (i.e. mailing list) for the time being. All major forum sections are invisible for anonymous guests.

The forum is not reserved to Brussels JUG members! Every member of the Java community is welcome!

However, you must be either part of the Brussels JUG LinkedIn group, an accepted member of the Brussels JUG Google Group (not being in ‘moderated’ state) or being known by the Brussels JUG team prior of being accepted. Being recommended by a Brussels JUG member, joining a JUG meeting or asking the team directly (via mail or during a JUG session) is also an option. All forum registration requests are verified by the administrators before access is granted.

The reason for this policy is, beside of keeping spammers and harvesters away, that we consider the forum as a non-public place (in contrary to the Google Group). Messages about excursions, journey and conference planning, brainstorming and project organisation may contain personal information like emails, phone numbers, addresses, and journey and absence details. Brainstorming is sometimes an exchange of personal opinions that aren’t intended to remain public for the next 200 years.

Currently, we propose the following collective excursions on the forum: FOSDEM 2011, JDC 2011, DEVOXX 2010 and BRUCON 2010. More will certainly follow. Moreover, we would like to propose building work groups for collaborations with the JCP (Java Community Process), the OWASP and other JUGs. If this will work-out depends on your interest in such activities. Other forum topics might be joint trainings for all kind of certifications or FOSS project subjects. More details about these brainchilds later.
